Scoring System
The Summer Lead Series implements a comprehensive scoring system that rewards climbers for their achievements on each route. Here's how the scoring works:
- 20 points for Zone #1
- 30 points for Zone #2
- 50 points for Top
- 60 points for Flash
Bonus points
An additional 10 points are awarded for flashing or topping a route within an active round.
and 5 bonus points for reaching a zone within an active round.
General rules
Scores can be accounted for only if a climber reaches the top/zone from the ground without falling or resting on rope/gear. Further info is in the glossary and FAQ below.
It's important to note that each climber can only be awarded one score and one set of bonus points per climb, emphasising the significance of every achievement.
* Our setting days will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays; thus, some routes might be ready before the rounds officially open. In this case, you are allowed to climb and score earlier. Bonus points for these earlier ticks will still apply.

Glossary
-
The top is defined as the final quickdraw on the route.
To top a route, a competitor must climb from the ground without falling or resting on a rope or gear and clip the final quickdraw.
-
The top is defined as the final hold on the route.
To be awarded a top score, a competitor must complete the climb from the ground without falling or resting on a rope or gear and control the final hold with both hands.
A top hold is considered controlled if the climber matches onto it and holds it steadily for at least 3 seconds.
-
A zone is a hold on the route that is marked as Zone 1 or Zone 2.
To be awarded a score for Zone 1 or Zone 2, you must reach and control the designated zone hold from the ground without falling or resting on a rope or gear.
Controlling a zone means that the climber has established a stable, secure hold on the designated zone hold. In practice this requires that:
A hand must be firmly and deliberately in contact with the zone hold for it to count.
You can control a zone hold by adjusting your body position using the hold, matching it with both hands or moving off the hold.
Merely touching, slipping off, or briefly holding the zone hold is insufficient; the hold must be controlled and stable for a proper score.
-
A flash means topping the climb on your first attempt.
You have only one chance for a flash. If you fail on your first attempt, you will only be able to zone or top the climb after.
-
Red-point is an outdoor term for successfully sending a route. A red-point is achieved when a climber eventually completes a route without falling or resting on the rope after one or more attempts.
Key points include:
Multiple Attempts Allowed: Unlike a flash, the climber may require previous attempts to work out the sequence.
Clean Ascent: On the successful attempt, every move is executed cleanly (with no falls or undue rests), even if the climber has practiced the moves on previous attempts.
Fun fact: This term originates from the outdoor tradition where a red dot was painted at the base of a route once a climber had sent—a practice that is no longer permitted.
-
This is the highest grade of a climb that you have successfully red-pointed (sent) or topped.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
No registration is needed; just start ticking the routes as they open and update your score with the staff at the front desk.
-
Yes, age requirements vary by category. Please refer to the Categories section for detailed information.
-
The finals will be a live, world-cup style event featuring the top 6 climbers from each eligible category.
-
Yes, provided you meet the eligibility criteria for each category you wish to enter.
-
Logging the scores is done directly in the gym. Ensure that you update your score as soon as you can to avoid losing possible bonus points.
The scoring can not be done over the phone or retrospectively.
-
Certainly! Always ensure to update your score as you go. You will be rewarded the highest score for the route throughout the competition.
An example:
If you reach Zone #1 in the first week the round opens you score 25 points (20 for the first zone and 5 as a bonus)
Then 2 weeks later you get to the Top, thus your score will be updated to 50 points (50 for the Top, no bonus points)
-
Yes, you can continue climbing the routes and score on them until the end of the competition. However, you will not receive the bonus points outside of the round.
For instance, if you successfully ‘top’ Route 1B during Round 1, you receive 60 points (50 points for the Top plus 10 bonus points). If you couldn’t top the same route within Round 1 but topped it after the round ended, you would receive 50 points without any bonus.
-
To keep the competition fair, you won’t be able to compete in the Novice category, as you are not a novice any more, and you won’t be able to compete in the Intermediate, Advanced or Open categories due to the lack of lead skills.
This does have an easy solution, though. Let us introduce you to the world of lead climbing. Book our popular lead course, and we’ll get you there.
It takes time to learn the skills, so don’t leave for too late.
-
That is correct. Anyone wishing to lead climb at Urban Jungle has to pass our in-house lead assessment. Find more details about lead climbing here.
